Great Resource for NYC Families: Advocates for Children of New York

Brightside Academy would like to provide information about a program many of our New York families utilize. Thank you to our friend Lisandra Fernández Soto, Legal Fellow at Advocates for Children of New York, for providing this great information.

Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) works to protect the educational rights of all New York City students, starting from birth. AFC focuses on helping students from low-income families who are struggling in school.

AFC helps families when they are having trouble with their children’s education. For example, AFC has helped parents whose children needed services, such as speech, occupational, and physical therapy, in preschool. AFC has helped parents with the move from preschool to kindergarten. In addition, AFC has helped parents whose children are English Language Learners get the bilingual special education classes and services that their children needed to do well in school.

In the past, AFC has partnered with Brightside Academy’s New York families to help them get the educational services their children needed in preschool or in kindergarten.

Parents who are worried about their children’s behavior or academics and want to discuss getting more support for their children in the classroom can reach out to AFC. For help or more information, AFC’s Education Helpline is available Monday through Thursday, from 10AM to 4PM, and the number is (866) 427-6033.
